The Creative Brief

Garzig Design needs a website and I am creating one for the artist to showcase her artwork. The primary goal of the website is to sell t-shirts while the secondary goal is to showcase them. In the long-term I would like to make it easy for Angel, of Garzig Design, to update to her website or even add content as she pleases.

Her target audience is probably anywhere from the ages of 16-30. If say a male or female were 21 and currently held a part time job at a restaurant, but really felt passionate about skating or music in Austin, Tx, they might buy a shirt from Garzig. They may Google search “austin tx screen printed t-shirts” or “austin tx skate t-shirts in order to find what they are looking for. Hopefully the site will be easy to find and abundantly linked. The typical task a visitor will do is buy a shirt; simply click the PayPal button and then approve transaction. These people care about the shirts, but in terms of the website, they subconsciously care about the simple functionality of the website where it’s easy to see all of the displayed goods and then purchase them. They may also want a simple form to communicate with Angel about sizes and when a new line of shirts is coming in. If they like the shirts by Garzig, they’ll enter the site to take a closer look. If they like the shirts, they’ll return. I don’t think the website has much to do with making the people want to come visit again. The target audience so far seems enthusiastic and ready to see more products. I want people to feel excited when the visit the site and pumped when they buy a shirt. The website will achieve this by being present and somewhat aesthetically pleasing.

Show your ATX enthusiasm.

Garzig Design client survey

Garzig Design is a t-shirt company geared towards skaters and Austin, Texas enthusiasts anywhere from 16-30. I will be designing the website myself because it’s pretty small, but Angel of Garzig Design (garzigdesign@gmail.com) has the final say before the site is launched on March 20, 2011. The owner currently does not have a domain name or site so I will be developing completely from scratch. The goal of the website is to make simple purchases of well designed t-shirts by using a PayPal button. The website will be simple yet elegant along with being easy to navigate. Minimal JavaScript will be used for navigation and possibly picture previews which Firefox has no problem with. The website will grow and receive traffic via word of mouth and linking on social networking sites. In the future, a more portfolio like site might be implemented but that’s totally up to Angel of Garzig Design.

Just like any public relations project, the construction of ideas is essential to the development of a website. This article by webstyleguide was both educating and informative. It explains and clarifies the foundation of what a website should be starting from the very beginning of its production. The people involved in the project and the vitality of their ability to communicate well is where it starts. Once the client is clear is with exactly what they want and know who their audience generally is. The designer or team of designers can think about how the website will be laid out so it’s intuitive and easy to navigate for visitors.

The picture above is pretty self explanatory and informative. It depicts the steps necessary to a site’s development and puts the designer and client in sync. They should be able to communicate which step they are on, which enables the client to provide information to the designer which ultimately continues their forward progress. With both parties being clear and understanding of the steps necessary to developing a successful site, it can be up and running in a timely manner.

Being able to create a site maintainable and easily manageable is also extremely important. Some clients may want to take maintenance into their own hands but others may want you (the designer) to maintain it. Keeping track of statistics along with designing with the simplest code is important to its health. If the code is simple in the original development it will be easier to update and edit as time moves on.

World Wide Web Consortium

The interconnection between computers has been a major factor to the development of the world. Internet as we know it has shaped the selling of goods and services, access of information, and communication. The world wide web makes it all possible and The World Wide Web Consortium is largely credited to its’ development.

The web has come along way since the 1940’s, when the first linking of electronic devices was established. It did take a some time to progress, but that has do to its’ correlation with the development and availability of other technologies. Twenty years after that first connection, an “oNLine System” was created  which does hypertext browsing, email, et cetera. Hypertext is still the foundation of the web today. Another twenty years later Tim Berners-Lee wrote a program that allowed links to be made without a direct connection then wrote a GUI  that could browse and edit hypertext. He named this the “WorldWideWeb”. In the early 90’s, Files were available on the net by FTP, which led to the installation of web servers in Europe and America. On April 30, 1993, CERN declared the “WorldWideWeb” could be used freely by everyone. Also in 93, Mosaic was the first browser able to display images.

transfer protocols such as, html, xhtmlwere implemented to create standards and specific types of codes that could be excepted by browsers.
